Sensing Materials Lab

Collective installation with Julia Wolf at Werkbundarchiv
- Museum of Things Berlin, as part of the exhibition “The Eroticism of Things.
Collections on the History of Sexuality“ 05-10/2018

Part of the research project “smart materials satellites”
What role do the sensual properties of new materials play in their development? What does sensuality mean in times of technologization? How do symbolic meanings and sensual material properties correlate? Does the sensual
level become less and less important when it comes to materials, which are developed for the implementation of technical high performance? Or, to put it differently: do materials that stem
from technical codes and respond to interaction
and stimulation as we do experience sensual
moments?

These questions were studied in an open sensory laboratory set-up as part of the exhibition “The Eroticism of Things“. Associative interactive tools and material artefacts to explore the relationship of symbolic meaning and sensual properties of materials collaborativly developed and designed with Julia Wolf. In two open workshops the questions were discussed with the visitors of the exhibition.
