Lilo Viehweg is a researcher, curator and educator with a background in Industrial Design and Cultural Studies. In her works she investigates critical historiographies of material based design processes, sustainability debates, the hierarchies of knowledge production and the related socio-political conditions of design. She teaches design research and develops collaborative formats for knowledge exchange inside and outside academia. Lilo is currently a PhD researcher in the Make/Sense programme at HGK Basel IXDM and University of Arts Linz in cooperation with the department of Cultural Studies at the Humboldt University Berlin. In her PhD research she investigates the becomings of piezoelectric materials - a project looking into critical historiographies and futures of particular electroactive minerals and their paths between mountain, clean-room, kitchen, landfill, and archive.

Between 2016 and 2022 she was a curator and researcher at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation engaging with material practices and transcultural histories of progressive design education. In 2019 she was affiliated as a researcher with the Weizenbaum Institute at the Berlin University of Arts looking into critical maker methods in open science networks in Berlin. Lilo gave workshops at, for example, the National Archaeology Museum Matera, Italy with the Critical Zones Study Group / ZKM Karlsruhe, at the Crafting Futures Lab at University of the Arts Linz, at the Dresden State Art Collections, and at the Institute of Physics at the Humboldt University Berlin with Kleine Humboldt Galerie. Her works were exhibited at Ars Electronica Linz, MAK Vienna, the Slovak Design Center, the Design Week Beirut, the Material Archiv Switzerland, the Werkbundarchiv - Museum of Things in Berlin and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation amongst others.

Since 2014 Lilo teaches in various Design and Architecture related fields. She was a visiting lecturer at the Weißensee Academy of Arts Berlin, the University of the Arts Berlin, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, the Zurich University of the Arts, the Academy of Art and Design Basel and the University of the Arts Kassel. From 2019 to 2022 she was a lecturer and thesis supervisor at the international MSc. program COOP Design Research at the University of Applied Sciences Anhalt Department of Architecture and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation in cooperation with the Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity” at the Humboldt University Berlin. From 2022-2025 she was affiliated as a teaching associate and mentor in the MA program Transversal Design (evolved from the MA Experimental Design) at the Academy of Art and Design Basel. Since 2024 Lilo is a lecturer in Design Theory and Discourse in Industrial Design at Zurich University of the Arts.
